The Candy Tree started out as a study in shading and highlighting. I came up with the idea on Thanksgiving, and I drew a couple sketches at that time. I realized that after the first sketch, the composition would probably be more of a still life with a small dramatic abstract flare. I spent more time studying how to work with the elements of this painting than any other project that I had taken on.
